Browse by Categories

The EVIA Digital Archive Project has identified a set of controlled vocabulary categories that facilitate browsing through the archive contents in a consistent way. These categories are designed to address the basic areas of inquiry and organization. Because controlled terms are applied across collections, browsing is a useful way to find comparative material and to gain an overview of the available media in the archive.

Each category is populated by terms from authoritative lists such as the Library of Congress subject headings, GEOnet, and the Getty Arts and Architecture Thesaurus. Terms are added as needed by the growing collections and the scholars and librarians who are assigning terms to the annotated video. The application of these terms represents the deep subject knowledge of a scholar and general library principles by a librarian.

Browsing only finds relevant segments where controlled vocabulary terms have been applied and does not necessarily locate segments where a given term has been used in the annotation text. Such a search requires the use of keywords. To effectively search using the power of both keyword searching and browsing, take advantage of the faceting search panel on a keyword search results page.
